A Kenyan lawyer by the name Paul Gicheru on Monday 2nd of November surrendered to the Netherlands authorities after a warrant of arrest was issued for him more than 5 years ago.
Paul Gicheru was Deputy President William Ruto’s lawyer at the ICC case that ended in 2013.
Him alongside Philip Kipkoech Bett, a fellow Kenyan, were jointly accused of “offences against the administration of justice” including corruptly influencing prosecution witnesses.
“Today, 2nd November 2020, Mr Paul Gicheru surrendered to the authorities of the Netherlands pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Pre Trial chamber 2 of the International Criminal Court,” a statement from their website read.
The Pre-Trial further states that “the warrant of arrest was issued under seal against Paul Gicheru and Philip Kipkoech Bett on 10 March 2015 and unsealed on 10 September 2015.”
On 2 November 2020, Paul Gicheru surrendered to the authorities of The Netherlands as reported by a Twitter user, Samira Sawlani and reiterated by the ICC website.

“Kenyan lawyer Paul Gicheru has surrendered to authorities in The Netherlands,” Samira’s tweet read.
What next after the surrender? According to the ICC website, “the Court has submitted a cooperation request to the Dutch authorities for the arrest and surrender of Paul Gicheru to the Court upon completion of the necessary national arrest proceedings.”
