Tononoka High School and Star of the Sea Secondary School in Mombasa have been closed after teachers and students test positive for coronavirus.
Trusted reports indicate that some students and teachers test results turned positive, forcing the specific management to shut down of the two institutions.
The County Commissioner of Mombasa, Mr Gilbert Kitiyo declined to reveal the number and names of those who tested positive saying they are still waiting for compilation of all the test results.
He confessed that Mombasa County is finding difficulty in dealing with the increasing number of COVID-19 patients as hospitals are full to capacity.
“Kaunti ya Mombasa inakumbwa na wakati mgumu kuhudumia idadi kubwa ya wagonjwa wa corona waliofurika hospitalini na kupelekea uhaba wa vitanda na hasaa vya wagonjwa mahututi, (the county government of Mombasa is facing a difficult time dealing with the increasing number of Covid-19 cases. Patients have filled up all the bed spaces hence inadequate bed capacities especially for critical patients” he said on Wednesday.
Previously, Mr. Kitiyo had warned Mombasa residents against violating set COVID-19 guidelines saying that the recent trend is alarming.
He further revealed that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get unoccupied beds at the emergency sections and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in hospitals within the county.
Joho warns residents
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho also warned that county officers will have to re-enforce stringent measures should the situation get worse.
“I urge you, the people of Mombasa, if you want us to do well on COVID-19 please wear your mask when you are close to people,” Joho said.
The two leaders spoke during the National Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Mama Ngina Waterfront on Tuesday.
Kenya’s total confirmed coronavirus cases is currently at 46,144 out of a cumulative sample size of 632,669 tests conducted since March.
